National Night Out - Keep Beachmont Safe!
by Laurie Leone
On the first Tuesday of each August, communities across America join together to say "Good Bye to Crime and Drugs." The nation-wide event is called National Night Out (NNO). NNO was first introduced to Revere in 1993 by Operation Crime Watch Revere, and Beachmont residents have been eager participants ever since. As in past years, the Beachmont Neighborhood Association will celebrate NNO by throwing a good-bye party for crime and drugs on Tuesday, August 3, from 6pm to 10pm at the Louis Pasteur Park on Leverett Avenue.
Through fun, games, and crime prevention education, BNA NNO Event Coordinators hope to bring to the forefront NNOs purpose: Say good-bye to crime and drugs.
Some exciting features to look for and participate in are:
Dance Against Drugs. Young and old can join together and have fun as they "dance against" drugs.
Make a Pledge Chain. Parents and youth are invited to make sincere pledges on how they plan to improve themselves through family responsibility, healthy alternatives, and simple promises not to use drugs or commit other crimes.
Shoot Down Crime Contest. On the Parks basketball court, kids of various age groups can show off their skills in the name of good, clean fun.
Safe Story. Children under the age of six will be treated to a special reading of McGruffs Be Smart, Be Safe storybook.
Take a Bite Out of Crime. All who attend the BNAs NNO celebration are welcomed to a special "McGruff the Crime (Hot) Dog" and "Soft Drinks not Hard Drinks." Special thanks in advance to Richard Penta and Fran Mazzeo for their contributing donations.
Flashlight March to Escort Crime & Drugs Out of Beachmont. The NNO finale in Revere has always come at 9pm when citizens join together to symbolically escort crime out of the neighborhood. Beachmonts parade of unified citizens is usually about 100 strong. We hope youll help us double that this year. Operation Crime Watch Revere provides special crime prevention glow sticks to all the children who participate.
Special Appearances. Beachmont Neighborhood Association, Beachmont Youth Association, Revere Police, Revere Fire Department, MBTA Police, MA Army National Guard, McGruff The Crime Dog, , Sparky the Fire Station Dalmation, MGH Revere C-A-R-E-S, and the MBTA Police
Everyone is welcome to join in this important, free family event. Please come to the Louis Pasteur Park on the evening of Tuesday, August 3 and help us "Keep Beachmont Safe."
